Going to the cinema has to be one of my favourite activities. Even though I have neglected it for quite a long time in 2015, during the summer I got to enjoy a lot of films, especially old ones, and payed some visits to the out door cinema in my home town.
I can’t say I’m a film geek or that I know all about the best directors or most prestigious movie roles, I just want to know what makes a great movie for you. Here are some of my favourites along with links to the trailers, in no particular order:
1. Die Welle

It’s one of those movies that almost everyone gets to see during their life at some point. When I watched it I remembered feeling like I did when I was reading 1984. On the edge of my chair and craving for more. The fact that this experiment was indeed a true story had me fascinated. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should write it down as soon as possible (after you read the rest of this list, duh)!
2. Manhattan

Woodie Allen was in top form when writing this along with Marshall Brickman. It’s such a refreshing film, even if sometimes the constant monologues tire you out, trust me on this one. If no one has succeeded in convincing you that people never change, Manhattan could do this job for you. Also, New York looks so incredible in these night time shots that you may or may not want to move there the day after you watch this.
3. Les Misérables

The musical. I know, I know. I’m getting more mainstream with each line, but this Victor Hugo based musical was one of the best I’ve watched in my whole life. It didn’t get tiring, it was entertaining and moving at the same time. Hugh Jackman nailed it. It deserved every success that it got. No kidding.
4. Les neiges du Kilimandjaro

French social dramas, I do love you don’t I? This one is an interesting film because it combines some heavy duty messages with humour and a great depiction of modern day life in France. Les neiges du Kilimandjaro features some outstanding performances from lead actors Ascaride and Darroussin that feel like a real couple seeking solution to the dilemma between the persecution of a robber and their conscience.
5. Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Ok. When I read the Hound of the Baskervilles I was so scared it was funny. (In my defense I was still very young) And now I would read another Sherlock Holmes adventure in a heartbeat. Firstly, I am a sucker for the English wit and the humour that this film is infused by. Secondly, the first few lines were undoubtedly cocky – which I loved- and the whole setting was more modern that you would expect from a Sherlock Holmes film. Somehow, though, it worked for me. And I hope it will as well for you too.
